Congratulations to English teacher Kaci Sublette on being selected to participate in the Library of Congress Summer Teaching Institutes! Each Institute week, Library of Congress education specialists facilitate sessions modeling strategies for using primary sources to engage students, build critical thinking skills, and construct knowledge. Participants reflect on and discuss how the strategies apply to their students, subject areas, and classrooms or school libraries.  It is a prestigious honor to be accepted for one of these institutes.  During the week, participants draw from among the millions of digitized primary sources in the Library's collections to design and refine a primary source activity to use with their students. While the emphasis is on learning and applying teaching strategies, participants also have opportunities to meet experts from the Library and possibly to research in the Library's reading rooms to gather information and resources to use in developing their activities.
Athlete of the Week
Junior, Lauren Klitenick is the Conch Athlete of the Week. She lead the team with 2 hits and 3 RBIs on the Lady Conch’s victory over Marathon, 6-5. One of those hits tied up the game in the 8th inning.
Nick Piraino received a computer from Mr. John Padgett and Mr. Jacob Dekker of Monroe Computes for taking AP Computer Science through FLVS.  If Nick passes the AP exam with a 3 or higher, he will be able to keep the computer.  Monroe Computes supports the MOS and other certification programs that provide college credit for students along with a monetary donation from the organization.   On hand to congratulate Nick were teacher Ebenson Michelin,  District Director of CTE programs Gerald Caputo and principal Amber Archer Acevedo.

COURSEWORK SUPPORT AND ASSISTANCE
After school support sessions are now available!  Students who need assistance or extra support have many opportunities to get help from teachers.  Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, teachers are available for Power Hour during the last 20 minutes of lunch.  In addition, the computer lab is open daily from 2:30-3:30 and the library is open every afternoon except Wednesday with teachers on hand to provide homework help and research assistance.  We have now expanded our support to include specialized sessions in several different curriculum areas.  Students do not need to attend the specific teachers class to attend the support sessions.  With mid-terms approaching and the semester nearing a close, students should take advantage of every opportunity to ensure they are mastering their coursework by getting help from the many different sessions offered.
